Toshiba to Mass Produce Portable Fuel Cells for Mobile Phones and Notebook PCs

Toshiba plans to begin mass production of portable fuel cells for use in mobile phones and notebook PCs, the Nikkei reported, adding that its assembly line based in Yokohama, Japan will kick off production in April 2009 at the earliest. Powered by methanol, the fuel cells will be priced between 10,000 Yen (US$101.7; US$1 = 98.3 Yen) and 50,000 Yen (US$508.7) but Toshiba stated that the price will go down significantly over time. Further details such as production capacity and investment value were not yet revealed. Aside from the external fuel cells, the company also aims to begin commercialization of mobile phones and notebook PCs with built-in fuel cells by the end of fiscal year 2009, which runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010, according to the same source.
